Intern Job Title: PR/Com Student Writer Intern
Internship Supervisor Name and Title: Lissa Diaz, Director of PR and Communications
Position Purpose:
To assist with the facilitation and coordination of the university communication and promotion efforts through writing, promotion and media relations under deadlines.
Essential Functions:
- Generate story ideas, conduct interviews and write campus news stories
- Write press releases
- Interview students and type up testimonials
- Research and write interesting Bethel Facts to be used in the magazine
- Interview and write stories for alumni e-newsletters
- Write for Bethel Magazine print and online editions
- Assist in any other writing needs
- Take photos and write captions for Alumni social media
Expectations:
- To broaden in-house capabilities
- To maintain an effective working relationship with Bethel employees
- To communicate upcoming events to PR/Com in a timely manner, allowing for input and adjustments for departmental needs
- To meet assignment deadlines
Knowledge and Skills
Experience: Junior or senior (or sophomore who shows exceptional potential) in journalism, public relations, marketing, communication, etc.
Interpersonal Skills:
- A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact.
- Work involves personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature.
- Transmitting information clearly and accurately.
Additional Skills:
- Excellent organizational abilities and written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
- Ability to operate computer equipment and software including word-processing, spreadsheet, and internal database mainframe for recordkeeping and communication purposes (Microsoft Office preferred).
- Promoting high morale by contributing a positive attitude.
- Adaptability: Contributing open-mindedness and willingness to adapt to changes and unexpected situations or deadlines.

Equipment and Machines Used: The computer is the primary piece of equipment used. In addition, a phone, copier, scanner, paper shredder and digital camera may be used.
Working Conditions: The physical environment of this position is a typical indoor office environment. Travel by car to attend events for stories or walking across campus is also part of the working environment. Long periods of sitting are often required.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands consist of sitting and operating a computer or phone for extended periods of time from within the office. Outside the office, some short-distance travel to meet with various story contacts may be required. In some cases the physical ability to handle heavy boxes containing print material of up to 25 pounds is needed.
